The origins of Racibórz date back to the period of the tribal state. It is one of the oldest cities in Silesia and Poland. Rahtibor, one of the first chronicled dukes of the Pomeranian tribe, gave the stronghold its name.

The settlement’s convenient location on the Amber Trail, leading towards the Moravian Gate, was an important factor in its development. During the reign of Mieszko I of Poland, the stronghold fell under the rule of the Piast monarchy. For centuries, Racibórz served as the seat of a castellany and then a duchy.

Contemporary Racibórz is a dynamically developing city focusing on tourism and recreation. The hallmark of the city is the extensive Odra River valley with numerous oxbow lakes and canoeing routes. Additionally, the city offers several tourist attractions such as the Piast Castle museum complex, the Gothic Church of St. James, and rebuilt market square tenements.
